A difficult schedule awaits the Women's Ice Hockey Club at the ACHA National Championships March 7th through 10th at Ashburn, VA's Ice House, the association announced today. In the preliminary round during the first two days of the tournament, Penn State will face Alaska, Wisconsin-Stout and North Dakota State, the teams ranked 1, 2 and 3 in the West Region's final ranking, in their pursuit of the ACHA Women's Division 2 title.
Wisconsin-Stout is the defending WD2 champion, after defeating Alaska 5-2 in the 2012 championship game in Wooster, OH. The Blue Devils are 11-3-1 in ACHA games this season and led by Lily Cranston (18 goals, 26 points and Ashley Gibson (13 goals, 25 points in eight games). The redemption-driven Nanooks boast a win and a tie against Stout in late January, and are 6-0-2 in ACHA games - impressively all but two of those two of those eight games have come against nationals qualifiers. Not to be forgotten, the North Dakota State Bison are 14-4-1 in ACHA games and average 5.16 goals per game, headlined by sophomore Kacie Johnson's 29 in 15 games.
An updated schedule for PSU can be found on the Schedule/Results page, but here is the full schedule for the preliminary rounds. The top four teams after the first two days of the tournament will compete in semifinals on March 9th, followed by the championship game on March 10th.
