WIHC Named Most Improved Club Sport

At the Sixth Annual Club Sports Program Honors Reception, held Thursday evening at Beaver Stadium's Mount Nittany Club, the Women's Ice Hockey Club was named the most improved of Penn State's 78 club programs.

The honor undoubtedly has a lot to do with the origins of the team and the outcome of its first season. Once the storied Lady Icers program, PSU's women's hockey team from 1996-2012, made the transition from ACHA to NCAA status, the Women's Ice Hockey Club started up and survived through the sheer determination and hard work of its student-athletes and coaches. Merely completing a foundation-establishing inaugural season was an unsatisfactory goal however, so Penn State charged all the way to the ACHA national championship game last month before falling to West Chester.

With nearly all of the team returning in the fall for the 2013-14 season, the WIHC will probably not be in the running to defend the award - they may have to settle for simply being "best" instead.
