New League Highlights 2013-14 Slate
The Women's Ice Hockey Club has announced its schedule for the fast-approaching 2013-14 season, one that features healthy doses of both novelty and familiarity.
Penn State will join the newly-formed women's side of College Hockey East in the team's second year, along with West Chester, Delaware and California. CHE promises to quickly become ACHA Women's Division 2's toughest conference, as each of its four teams qualified for the ACHA National Tournament last season, with WCU taking the title.
There will be two games at home and on the road against each league opponent - highlighted by the Golden Rams' visit to Pegula Ice Arena on November 9th and 10th in a rematch of last season's national championship game - so CHE matches dominate the docket, making up 12 of the 18 regular season games in all. Delaware's Fightin' Blue Hens come to Hockey Valley on December 7th and 8th, followed by the Cal Vulcans on January 31st and February 1st, 2014.
However, PSU will open the season, and break in the brand-new $90 million home of Penn State hockey, on September 27th against new opponent Liberty, with a rematch scheduled for the following day at Galactic Ice Rink in Altoona. The WIHC's other non-league games include repeat opponents Slippery Rock (November 22nd at home, February 7th, 2014 away) and Michigan State (October 19th and 20th at home).
The inaugural CHE playoffs will take place over the weekend of February 21st-23rd, 2014 at a site to be determined. After that, the team will attempt to win the university's first women's hockey national championship, and the first by any Penn State hockey team since 2003, at the ACHA championships hosted by Delaware from March 13th through 16th, 2014.
