Leading up to Friday night's season opener against Liberty at Pegula Ice Arena, head coach Pat Fung has announced the Women's Ice Hockey Club's on-ice leadership group for this season.
Senior forward Carly Szyszko will be Penn State's captain, reprising her 2012-13 role. Allie Rothman, a senior on defense, also retains her alternate captaincy from last season. Junior defender Ashton Schaffer is the newcomer to the group and will join Rothman with an A on her jersey.
The trio is part of a core group of remaining players who have played for both the WIHC and the Lady Icers, Penn State's previous ACHA Division 1 team. They will attempt to steer the squad, which includes nine other returning players and six newcomers, to PSU's first women's hockey national championship beginning with a series against Liberty this weekend. Friday's game - the first intercollegiate hockey game in Pegula Ice Arena history and featuring a ceremonial puck drop by Associate Athletic Director Joe Battista - begins at 10:15 p.m. Saturday's rematch will be played at Galactic Ice Rink in Altoona beginning at 6:30 p.m.
