Highlighted by 11 returning players and seven newcomers, a formidable 18-player roster will represent the Penn State Women's Ice Hockey Club in the 2013-14 season, the team has announced.
The upcoming edition of the WIHC promises to be very stout defensively. Both goalies - Katie Vaughan and Sarah Eisenhut - return to reunite one of the elite tandems in the nation. Each spent most of last season ranked among the top five in ACHA Women's Division 2 in both goals against average and save percentage, and Vaughan was second-team All-ACHA Tournament as well as an ACHA All-American honorable mention.
Penn State's goalies will be protected by an extraordinarily deep group of blueliners. Standouts Allie Rothman, Ashton Schaffer, Tara Soukup and Jackie Saideh are all back to help keep the opposition at bay. They'll be joined by reinforcements Anna Marcus, Kim Badorrek and Cassie Dunne. Marcus was all-conference at Ridgefield High School in Connecticut last season, and helped the Tigers to a 13-7-2 record and a berth in the state semifinals. Badorrek is also a high-end recruit, having previously played for the Tier 1 Team Pittsburgh organization on both the U16 and U19 teams, and Dunne arrives from the respected Princeton Tiger Lilies program.
Experienced forwards Carly Szyszko, Mary Kate Tonetti, Elizabeth Denis, Nina Elia and Taylor Nyman will provide scoring punch. Szyszko leads all returning players with five 2012-13 goals, two of which were game winners. Tonetti averaged half a point per game in her first-ever season without goalie pads, and Elia scored the biggest goal in team history so far: a double-overtime putback to propel PSU over Wisconsin-Stout in the 2013 ACHA semifinals and into the national championship game. Senior Sam Summers, although not on the team last year, will also provide experience as she was a member of the ACHA WD1 Penn State Lady Icers for 48 games from 2009-2011. Incoming freshmen Geneva Wagoner, Hannah Dier and Lucy Yeatman will also bolster the offense. Wagoner played at Millbrook School in New York, which finished as the New England prep Division II runners-up in 2012-13, while Dier comes from Wall High School in New Jersey. Yeatman played for the Chester County Skating Club Cougars last season and tied for the team goal-scoring lead.
