The Opponent

Name: California University of Pennsylvania
Nickname: Vulcans
Location: California, PA

Series History: The Women's Ice Hockey Club played at Cal in its first-ever games last season, but the Vulcans took both halves of the series by winning 2-1 in overtime - Margo Laboon scored the decider - on October 6, 2012 and 2-0 the next day.

About Cal: Among the most successful programs in ACHA Women's Division 2, Cal is coming off of its second straight appearance in the ACHA National Tournament and also spent much of last season as the top ranked team in the country. The 2011 champions in the DVCHC certainly look the part of title contender once again, as their first two games this season were blowout wins over local rivals Indiana (PA) and Slippery Rock. The Vulcans return their top six scorers from a year ago, including Megan Cooper, who scored her 100th career point in the opening win over IUP, and Kelsey DeNardo, who averaged better than a goal per game in 2012-13. Goalie Maria Sciacca is also among the ACHA's best.

Trivia: Boxer Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammad Ali, fought at Cal's home Rostraver Ice Garden during his amateur career.
