Preview: Women's Ice Hockey Club Returns to PIA to Host Slippery Rock

What: Penn State (8-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 College Hockey East) hosts Slippery Rock (7-4-0 overall, 7-2-0 Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference) in a non-conference game

When: Friday, November 22nd at 9:00 p.m.

Where: Pegula Ice Arena Varsity Rink; University Park, PA

Notable: Slippery Rock was the opponent for the first home game in Women's Ice Hockey Club history - a 8-0 win for the hosts in Altoona last December 9th.

Game Notes

Sharing the Wealth: Penn State is one of just three teams in ACHA Women's Division 2 where every non-goaltender with games played has recorded points this season (California and Minnesota-Duluth are the others).

Shutting it Down: PSU has reinforced its status as one of the nation's best defensive teams over the last two weekends by allowing two goals against Delaware after surrendering just three times against explosive West Chester. Overall, the 11 goals scored on the WIHC this season (in 10 games) are the fewest against any WD2 team with registered games.

D to the O: In addition to keeping goaltender Katie Vaughan clean, Penn State's blueline has also been notable for its offensive contributions. Versus Delaware, Allie Rothman scored the only blue-and-white goal in Saturday evening's 1-1 tie on an end-to-end rush, while setting up Mary Kate Tonetti's eventual winner on Sunday. Rothman also (along with Cassie Dunne) assisted on Carly Szyszko's late score in that game. Meanwhile, Tara Soukup's laser pass set freshman Geneva Wagoner off for an eventual breakaway tally and her blast on net resulted in a Devon Fisk goal during the 6-1 rout.

Keystone State of Mind: Slippery Rock is PSU's third different Pennsylvania-based opponent this season, representing five of the team's 11 games so far. Against commonwealth rivals to this point, the WIHC is 3-1-0 thanks to a road split with California on October 11th and 12th and a home sweep of West Chester on November 9th and 10th.

Tight Schedule: By playing a tenth 2013-14 regular season contest on Sunday against Delaware, Penn State has already exceeded its total of nine 2012-13 regular season games. One originally-scheduled game last year that was not played: a February 22nd matchup with Slippery Rock that was to be the final intercollegiate hockey game at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion.

The Opponent

Name: Slippery Rock University
Nickname: Pride
Location: Slippery Rock, PA

Series History: PSU leads, 1-0-0. The aforementioned 8-0 victory by PSU in Altoona on December 9, 2012 was paced by Fisk and Mandy Mortach with four goals apiece. Tonetti and Ashton Schaffer each had a pair of assists, while Vaughan and Sarah Eisenhut split the shutout.

About Slippery Rock: Although not possessing the luxury of depth (12 players in all), the Pride has raced out to a strong start in the DVCHC. SRU holds down first place in the Jennifer Parcell Memorial Division with a 7-2-0 conference record, including wins over Virginia, Rutgers, Liberty, Towson and Maryland. As expected, star junior Christy Pastucha has led SRU's offense. Pastucha, a product of the Tier 1 Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program, has scored an incredible 33 goals (along with nine assists) in 11 games. While something of a one-woman show last season, Pastucha is now complemented by Laura Anderson, formerly of Niagara University's club team, who has scored 16 times. May Prohaska is the Pride's goaltender, and she'll be fronted by an experienced defense, including seniors Amanda Brawley and Lacey Allis.

Trivia: Slippery Rock's notable alumni include St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams, musician Donnie Iris, and actor Chuck Aber, who has appeared in productions as diverse as Mister Rogers' Neighborhood and The Silence of the Lambs.
