Vaughan's 33 Saves Help Boost Team USA Over Russia in WUG Opener

Senior goaltender Katie Vaughan made 33 saves as Team USA opened the World University Games with a stunning 4-2 win over Russia in Pergine, Italy, Tuesday morning.

The Pittsburgh native was no small factor in the victory. She served as an equalizer against a 35-24 Russian shot advantage, but only conceded twice in a game where the U.S. never trailed. Maria Kirilenko scored both for the Russians, one tying the game at one in the first period and the other trimming the Team USA lead to 3-2 early in the third.

Vaughan, however, saved her biggest moments for after Kirilenko's second. With 11:13 remaining in what was still a 3-2 contest, she stopped Oxana Afonina on a penalty shot to preserve the American advantage, then made another phenomenal save a few minutes later to help start a sequence that led to an insurance marker by Miami's Katie Augustine.

The other Team USA goals came from Rhode Island's Cassie Catlow and Alishia DiFilippo, as the Rams teammates helped produce a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Minnesota's Molly Sparks scored on a fortunate bounce after rushing the puck in the middle period to provide a temporary bit of cushion, and Vaughan added 15 saves to make it hold up as the only scoring of the frame.

"We weren't sure how good we were going to be going into the game, but now we know," head coach Mo Stroemel told USAHockey.com. "This was a really good Russian team. Not only do we know we have a good team, but a great bunch of people on this team. As a staff, we're looking forward to continuing the tournament on Thursday and helping this group reach its potential."

Stroemel's squad will next take on Great Britain on Thursday at 6:00 a.m. eastern. Preliminary-round fixtures against Japan, Canada and Spain follow on Friday, Sunday and next Monday, December 16th. Top-four success against those opponents will ensure a bid in the semifinals on December 18th, with the gold and bronze medal games on December 20th.
