Women's Ice Hockey Club Still The One in Season's Second ACHA Ranking

Penn State remains the top team in ACHA Women's Division 2's East Region, according to the fall semester-closing second coaches poll of the 2013-14 season. The latest ranking was released Friday and includes all games played through December 15th.

Since first being named number one on November 22nd, the Women's Ice Hockey Club has only reinforced its case to be there with a 3-0-0 record during the ranking period - a 7-2 win over Slippery Rock that night was followed by a combined 10-0 score in a sweep of Delaware on December 7th and 8th. The latter two results came in spite of star goaltender Katie Vaughan's absence to play in the World University Games in Italy. PSU is 11-1-1 overall and 6-1-1 in College Hockey East.

The WIHC led a parade of sameness in the East, as each of the region's eight teams retained their slotting in the new poll. The West Region was a bit more volatile with Alaska replacing Minot State in the top four, the cutoff for invitations to the ACHA National Tournament March 13th through 16th in Newark, DE. The February 9, 2014 edition of the rankings will decide which eight teams will compete for the title.

Penn State is back in action after winter break with a key series at defending national champion West Chester on January 18th and 19th.
