Three for Three: PSU Remains Atop East Region in Season's Third Ranking

The Women's Ice Hockey Club remains in the East Region's pole position, according to the third ranking of the season, released Friday and including all games played through January 26th.

Penn State has been the east's top-rated team each time this season, thanks to a 12-1-2 overall record heading into this weekend's showdown with California (PA), which remains in close pursuit as number two. Since the second ranking's release in December, PSU has played just twice - a tie and a win at West Chester on January 18th and 19th.

Michigan State is one highlight of the poll, as the Spartans move from the West Region to the East Region and check into fifth place, in strong contention for a nationals bid. MSU trails third-ranked West Chester and fourth-ranked Delaware, with the Golden Rams and Blue Hens both holding their spots from last time.

Over in the west, things also held relatively static: North Dakota State and Iowa State matched PSU and Cal by running 1-2 for the third time this season, although the Bison enjoy a larger points cushion over their challengers. 2012 national champion Wisconsin-Stout holds down third, with Alaska hanging on to fourth and three-time title winner Rainy River behind the Nanooks in fifth.

The fourth poll, slated to close just over a week from now on February 9th, will decide the eight teams that will compete for the ACHA national championship from March 13th through 16th. The top four teams from each region will receive an invitation to the University of Delaware for the tournament.
