|Former Lady Icer Andrea Lavelle shows off her MVP trophy from the 2002 ACHA National Tournament|
The Penn State Lady Icers were PSU's first and only women's hockey team for sixteen seasons, from 1996 through 2012. In that time, they qualified for six ACHA National Tournaments (including the first four after the 2000-01 founding of the ACHA's initial women's division), won six conference regular season or playoff championships, produced 14 Academic All-Americans, 11 All-Americans and six All-Tournament selections. The latter two categories include Andrea Lavelle, the 2002 Zoe M. Harris Award winner as the ACHA player of the year and the most valuable player of that year's national championships.
In short, the Lady Icers laid the foundation for the success the Women's Ice Hockey Club has enjoyed in its first two seasons - quite literally, in fact, as seven key players and organizational leaders from those first rosters as well as head coach Patrick Fung were involved with the team prior to establishing the WIHC in 2012-13.
Appropriately, the WIHC has taken steps to honor this legacy, including the recent naming of its MVP and Player's Player awards for legendary Lady Icers figures Mo Stroemel and Billie Willits, as well as listing pre-2012 awards and season-by-season records as part of its own history. In that spirit, the WIHC is proud to announce that its website, psuwihc.com, now includes the most comprehensive collection of Penn State women's hockey historical information ever assembled.
- Lady Icers rosters dating back to 1999-2000, including team photos of each squad from 2004-05 to the present, as well as a group picture of 2001-02's ACHA third-place finishers.
- Individual player stats beginning with that 2001-02 team.
- A nearly-complete list of scheduled games and results from 1999-2000 - only two undocumented games from 2003-04 as well as the outcome of a March 18, 2001 contest with Buffalo are missing.
The information, which was assembled using old articles from The Daily Collegian (Penn State's student newspaper), the archived websites of the Lady Icers, opponents, the ACHA, and even sources geared primarily towards NCAA hockey such as USCHO and CollegeHockeyStats.net, is accessible through two different methods.
One is by visiting the Year-by-Year Results page, under the History menu at the top of the site. There, each season played by both the Lady Icers and WIHC is listed with links to its roster, stats and schedule underneath (as well as rankings, standings and photos for post-2012 squads). Additionally, all roster, schedule and stats pages site-wide now include a dropdown menu at the bottom for convenient navigation to different seasons.
If you have any information that would enhance the present accumulation, please contact WIHC Hockey Information Director Kyle Rossi at firstname.lastname@example.org.
