Lady Ice Lions Batter Delaware with 56 Shots on Goal, Win 5-1

Darby Kern has six goals and nine points in just three games this season

Last season, the Lady Ice Lions' games against then-College Hockey East rival Delaware were characterized by tenacious Blue Hens teams able to slow down the game and hold Penn State to closer-than-expected wins, even stealing a tie from one meeting.

This season, through the first half of the only 2014-15 series between the teams anyway, the Lady Ice Lions had no intention of letting the Blue Hens hang around.

Darby Kern added two more goals to her scorching nine-points-in-three-games start, while Taylor Nyman and Jackie Saideh added their first tallies of the new season as Penn State downed Delaware 5-1 Saturday night at Pegula Ice Arena. With the win, the Lady Ice Lions climb to 3-0-0 overall (while remaining 2-0-0 in the ECWHL), while the Blue Hens fall to 2-3-0.

Penn State was relentless for the opening 20 minutes, peppering UD goalie Emily Becker (who finished with 51 saves) with 18 shots. Still, it appeared as if PSU would fail to get into the locker room with the lead. That is, until Kern struck for her fifth goal of the season. The junior from Venetia, PA held her ground down low while defenseman Madison Smiddy kept a clearing attempt in at the line. With most of UD's team over-pursuing the puck, Smiddy was able to find Kern to deposit the puck behind Becker. Less than a minute later, with nine seconds remaining, hard-working junior Saideh scored her first of the season after winning the puck behind the net and wheeling out to the left-wing circle for the shot.

The middle period would prove nearly a carbon copy of the first - Penn State actually increased its shot dominance, to 21-4 during the frame - although the goals would come more quickly. Nyman made the score 3-0 with her first of the season midway through, after Anna Marcus won a puck battle behind the net and worked it to the front for attempts by Lucy Yeatman first, then Nyman for the finish.

Four minutes later, Kern scored her second, taking a 50-50 puck from the left-wing wall (one that was kept available by linemate Geneva Wagoner) and moving into the middle before sniping.

The Blue Hens finally found some traction in the third period, offering their most sustained pressure of the game early on, and cashing it in for a Jordan Hagerty goal to trim the Lady Ice Lion lead to 4-1. However, that was the only puck Mary Kate Tonetti would let behind her during a 20-save effort that included a denial of a first-period Sam DiSabatino breakaway.

Devon Fisk notched her fourth goal of the season with 55 seconds remaining in the contest for the final margin of victory.

Penn State will attempt to finish the border rivalry sweep of Delaware on Sunday afternoon at 12:45 in Pegula Ice Arena, ahead of a trip to 2014 ACHA Division 1 runner-up Massachusetts next weekend.
