Kern, Murphy and Fisk Lead PSU to Record 9-0 Rout of Navy

Claire Gauthier scored her first career goal in the rout

Don't make the Lady Ice Lions mad.

Fresh off of being demoted in the first in-season ranking of 2014-15 - from 11th in the preseason poll to 12th - despite a 4-2-0 start, Penn State unloaded on Navy 9-0 Sunday afternoon in Pegula Ice Arena.

The freshly-assembled line of Darby Kern, Katie Murphy and Devon Fisk ran show on the Midshipmen all afternoon, combining for six goals and seven assists, to help PSU climb to 5-2-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the ECWHL. Navy dropped to 4-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the ECWHL.

Senior defenseman Cara Mendelson (who enjoyed a three-point outing herself) got the barrage started, collecting a loose puck at center and cruising in down left wing. She first attempted to center to Riley O'Connor, but the puck deflected right back on to the Pittsburgher's stick, so she did the honors herself.

Kern got on the board next, banging one home from Fisk midway through the first period. Claire Gauthier then followed just 33 seconds later with her first collegiate goal to make the score 3-0. On the play, Sam Siciliano fired on from center point, and the puck bounced around before landing on the No. 7's stick just to the right of the cage for an easy deposit. Murphy closed out a dominant opening 20 with her third goal of the season, a second-chancer from the Gauthier spot after Kern threaded the puck through from the bottom of the left-wing circle.

The second period was the Lady Ice Lions' quietest of the three, with Kern accounting for the only scoring after popping one into a gaping net after Murphy drove the middle to create a loose puck in front.

The sudden drop in offense took a sharp reversal in the third period, as four more closed out a productive return to game action for PSU after two weekends off. Murphy grabbed still another rebound goal 6:40 in, after the line of Tarika Embar, newcomer Lauren Chaby and Lucy Yeatman did a great job to flip the ice after some early Navy pressure. Fisk and Kern struck 31 seconds apart shortly after that, with the latter taking Mendelson's pass and swooping down the left with a slick backhand-forehand to finish off her hat trick. Jackie Saideh closed out the scoring in the last minute of play.

In the contest, the Lady Ice Lions tied a team record - coincidentally set initially against Navy on January 13, 2013 - with nine goals. The nine-goal margin of victory is a new high water mark.

Penn State fired 49 shots on Midshipmen goalie Sarah Hutchinson, while on the other end, Mary Kate Tonetti wound up with a 24-save shutout that got progressively more difficult as the game went on. PSU took the only two penalties of the game, but killed both.

Next up, the team will travel for one of the year's biggest series, against perennial ECWHL and ACHA title contender Rhode Island. Puck drops are set for 2:00 p.m. next Saturday, November 8th, and 12:00 p.m. on November 9th.
