Lady Ice Lions Watson, Kern, O'Connor Honored as All-ECWHL Selections

Kelly Watson notched the Lady Ice Lions' sixth All-ECWHL first or second team selection

Three Lady Ice Lions have received All-ECWHL team recognition for the 2015-16 season, as determined by a vote of the league's head coaches.

Senior forward Darby Kern and sophomore defenseman Kelly Watson were both named to the league's second team.

Kern, Penn State's first documented player to ever win two all-conference honors after placement on the first team as a junior, posted 25 goals and 21 assists this season, output that kept her among the top five scorers in ACHA Division 1 all season long. She opened the campaign with a five-point outing against newly-minted ECWHL champion Massachusetts and never looked back, later embarking on a 14-game point streak this semester that was finally snapped with a shutout loss to Rhode Island in the ECWHL semifinals. The former player for PSU's NCAA team shattered most team scoring records in her two-year career with 107 points on 59 goals and 48 assists.

Watson likely won't break Kern's scoring records (she has 14 points in two seasons), but is just as effective at her area of the game. The Binghamton, NY native evolved into an anchoring blueliner this season, likely leading the team in ice time (a stat unfortunately not recorded) while playing in all situations and dependably shutting down assignments. Watson went the entire 2015-16 season without taking a penalty, a stat particularly impressive given that six of the top seven scorers in ACHA Division 1 (excluding Kern) play in the ECWHL. Offensively, the lucky 13 chipped in a pair of power play goals, one against Massachusetts on January 10th and the other versus Vermont in the ECWHL third-place game on February 21st.

A breakout season for sophomore forward Riley O'Connor was formalized with an honorable mention nod.

Although she did star as a freshman with nine goals and 17 points, O'Connor bumped those totals to ten and 25 while continuing to develop the well-roundedness required of a top-line center. The fast food aficionado trailed only Kern in team scoring and ripped off a five-game, 11-point run from January 31st until February 13th - with three of those games notably against national title contenders Rhode Island and Liberty.
