Canadian Bacon: Adrian Flattens Penn State 9-0 To Open Series

Meghan Miller and PSU had few answers for Adrian on Friday

Every dog has its day, and Friday was definitely one for the fourth-ranked Adrian Bulldogs.

Kaillie Hardy scored three times while Nicole Paradis supplied a trio of assists in a game that was effectively over by the end of a five-goal first period, a 9-0 Adrian rout that dropped the Penn State Women's Ice Hockey Club's 2016-17 record to 2-6-0 overall.

Although the game started with a relatively even, free flowing four-plus minutes, Adrian quickly made the score 3-0 by the 11-minute mark through Britt Levasseur, Kyleen Wilson and Hardy's first. The Bulldogs repeatedly used their trademark aggressiveness on the puck to generate chances while exploiting numerous defensive lapses, particularly on back-door plays and other action near the blue paint - a reality demonstrated by the fact that AC's nine goals came on just 40 shots.

By the end of the first period, Kirstin LaBelle and Taylor Murcek pushed the score to 5-0, to relegate things to "playing for pride" status.

PSU was improved in the second period, limiting the shot count for the 20 minutes to 8-5 in AC's favor, although Jess Harrison made the score 6-0 with five minutes remaining. Hardy's second and third goals, as well as a first career tally by Meagan Coleman, closed out the scoring.

Several of Penn State's better chances to break the shutout flowed through Tarika Embar, who had a couple of choice transitional efforts early on, fed by Darian Dempsey and Riley O'Connor. The Lady Ice Lions' solid power play also registered three opportunities, with an O'Connor rebound try and Cassie Dunne rush, both in the second period, standing out within those six minutes.

Freshman goalie Meg Lydick, who has played every minute in the blue and white crease this season, closed with 31 saves.

The Lady Ice Lions and Bulldogs will close the series on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., before Penn State resumes ECWHL play on the road against Massachusetts and Northeastern in two weeks.
