Lady Ice Lions Blanked By Hamer, Michigan State, 4-0

Meg Lydick was busy but effective in the Penn State crease

Despite an outstanding goaltending effort from Meg Lydick, the Penn State Lady Ice Lions dropped the middle segment of the three-game weekend in Michigan, 4-0 to No. 9 Michigan State Saturday evening in East Lansing, MI to fall to 3-13-0 overall.

After a strong, mostly-even start, defenseman Amanda Anderson abruptly opened the scoring midway through the first period by hammering Kelsey Jaeckle's cleanly-won offensive draw high past Lydick. And, as happened against Michigan on Friday when PSU surrendered two goals in 14 seconds, the few shifts following goals proved deadly.

Just 1:38 after the Anderson tally, Kelsey Cross doubled the MSU advantage on a tight angle shot roughly even with the Penn State goalline to Lydick's right. Following a fantastic initial save, Cross tracked down the rebound and threw the puck on net, a move that paid off as Lydick cheated a bit on the more-likely possibility of a centering pass.

That 2-0 margin survived the first period, despite a 1:30 Lady Ice Lions 5-on-3 following penalties to Jaeckle and Anderson, roughly five minutes after they combined for the first Spartans goal. It also survived the second period despite a sheet of ice heavily tilted towards Lydick's end, as the freshman played one of the best periods of her young career.

Lydick wound up with a career-high 64 saves on 68 Spartan shots.

MSU did manage to solve her twice more in the third period to salt the game away, however. Amelia Schroeder went first on a spectacular end-to-end rush down the right side, gaining a step on the defense down the wing, and going backhand-forehand before burying. Jenay DeCaussin wrapped up the scoring from the slot with 15:54 remaining, standing as one of nine different Spartans to record a point in the game.

Kathryn Hamer earned the shutout for Michigan State on the other side of the ice with 11 stops. Both teams came up empty on the power play, the Spartans on three tries and and Penn State on two (but including the aforementioned long 5-on-3).

Penn State's weekend concludes continues on Sunday afternoon with a rematch against the Spartans. Game time is set for 12:15 p.m.
