Penn State Collects Team-Record-Tying Five Academic All-Americans

Lucy Yeatman has been one of the team's top academic performers throughout her career

Seniors Lucy Yeatman and Cassie Dunne, along with juniors Riley O'Connor, Kelly Watson and Tarika Embar have been named ACHA Academic All-Americans for the 2016-17 season, the association has announced.

Eligibility for Academic All-American status requires that a player carry a 3.50 or better cumulative grade point average, as well as a junior or senior class standing. A total of 81 players in ACHA Division 1 met those criteria.

For Dunne, the accolade clinches her senior season's place as one of the most-honored campaigns in Penn State history. This year alone, the soon-to-graduate public relations major has won a major ACHA award and All-ECWHL first-team status along with, of course, her selection to the 2017 U.S. National University Team - which she captained to a bronze medal.

Watson has also received a couple other awards this season. The standout biology student was honored this week as the ACHA's Community Playmaker as well, and she was an ECWHL All-Conference honorable mention prior to that. The product of Binghamton, NY had a career-best five points in her last game, on February 26, 2017 against Northeastern.

Embar, a kinesiology major, also ended her year on a high, scoring in that Northeastern game as well as three weeks prior to that against NCAA Division III's Lebanon Valley College. The former Steel City Selects member is universally praised by her teammates as one of the squad's hardest workers and most improved players.

Yeatman, quite simply, is the type of player that justifies the existence of Academic All-American awards. She's been one of the team's strongest classroom performers throughout her career, as evidenced by her 3.91 average in a challenging mathematics/actuarial science curriculum. She has served the team as its treasurer for the past two seasons and posted the best point total of her three years in D1 as a senior.

As the team's soon-to-be president for 2017-18, O'Connor is also a vital part of the WIHC's off-ice operations. The biobehavioral health major, a former team rookie of the year and a two-time ECWHL all-league honoree, has been the Lady Ice Lions' top-line center on most occasions since early in her freshman year. Her 46 career points lead all active players and are third most in team history.

Penn State's five honorees are tied for fourth nationally, trailing only Massachusetts, Michigan State and Colorado. However, PSU's count came from a total of just eight eligible upperclassmen. It also ties for the most in a single season in school history, matching the five Academic All-Americans on the 2004-05 Lady Icers. Although the ACHA hands out academic awards rather sporadically (including not at all from 2012-13 through 2014-15), Penn State has always been one of D1's most academically-inclined teams, including a run of nine Academic All-Americans from 2009-10 through 2011-12.
